For most of the 1800s, finding where the Nile began was the great unanswered question of European exploration. On 28 July 1862 John Hanning Speke stood at Jinja, watched the river pour out of Lake Victoria, and wrote that the problem was solved.
He named the drop Ripon Falls. It is not there any more — the falls were drowned in 1954 when the Owen Falls Dam went up downstream, and the water that once fell over a rock ledge now runs deep and fast instead. What remains is the line itself: the exact place the lake stops being a lake and the river begins.
From there the Nile runs about 6,650 kilometres north through eleven countries to the Mediterranean. Everything the river is famous for further downstream — Sudan, the cataracts, the temples, the delta — starts within sight of our office. In 1948 a portion of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes was immersed here, and there is a memorial to him in the gardens on the east bank.
We are women-owned, deliberately small and based on Iganga Road. The rafting put-in is minutes away. The bungee tower, the quad tracks and the boat crews are all people we know by name, so when a plan needs changing on the morning we change it rather than apologise for it. No fleet, no booking engine — just a direct line to the person who will be with you for the trip.
